This quote is significant because it describes how much Gregor is obligated to his family. It sounds as though Gregor is the
main source of income in the household, and if he were to lose his job, the family’s already existent troubles would
worsen by a significant amount. Thus, he seeks to catch the manager, in hopes of keeping his job. Gregor is willing to continue
working despite his non-human state, which gives the reader a bit of insight into the characterization of Gregor. Gregor is
loyal to his family and feels responsible for their well-being. He’s hard-working in that he has been working at the
firm for so long and hasn’t missed a day at the firm in order to keep his paychecks coming to support his family. This
passage also characterizes his parents. His parents’ knowledge of what goes on at the firm is limited; they simply know
that the firm pays Gregor to perform the tasks he does. They don’t comprehend the pressure Gregor is under, due to both
the atmosphere of the firm as well as his strict boss. To put it frankly, his parents don’t seem to care about much
except the suffering they’ve been encountering and the money that Gregor is bringing in to ease the suffering. The narrator’s
tone in this passage sounds a bit frantic. Gregor sounds very concerned about his job being jeopardized by his current conditions
and knows that if he doesn’t try to convince the manager that he’s still willing to work, his family’s future
won’t be as promising. The tone also sounds determined. Gregor seems determined to support his family, perhaps because
he has become their only hope and should he fail, he would be devastated.
